Obituary
Alberta Smith Crosby of South Boston, VA died Friday, February 18th at the age of 84.
Mrs. Crosby was born in Halifax County, Virginia on September 6, 1937 and was the daughter of the late Willie Herman Smith and Elma Terry Smith.
Alberta attended the Halifax County public schools and continued her formal education at Piedmont Tech in Roxboro, North Carolina to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. At an early age she professed her faith in Christ and joined County Line Missionary Baptist Church. There she sang with the Senior Choir, was a Missionary and served with the Pastor’s Aide Committee.
Alberta was married to Mr. Edgar Herbert Crosby, who preceded her in death, and to this union two children were born: Edgar Daniel Crosby and Cortez Anthony Crosby. She was employed at South Boston Hospital, Roses 5 and 10 Cents Store in South Boston, VA, Medical Transportation for the State of Virginia, Clover Yarns, and The Woodview Nursing Home from which she retired after sixteen years of service.
Alberta leaves to cherish loving memories five sons: Herman Eugene Smith of Bronx, New York, Jerome Smith (Gracie) and Larry Smith (Faye), all of Richmond, VA, Edgar Crosby (Kimberly) of Greensboro, NC and Cortez Crosby of Lynchburg, VA; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; two brothers: Samie Kay Smith of Halifax, VA and Art Moran Smith of Richmond, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including the devoted friends, Linda Young, Harry Womack, and Corlys Ballou. In addition to her parents, Alberta was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Marie Rogers.
Funeral services for Mrs. Alberta Smith Crosby will be held Thursday, February 24th at 12:30 p.m. with services at The Crawford House Chapel in Halifax with Rev. Dr. Otis Dillard, eulogist. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery, South Boston, VA.
Public viewing for family and friends will be Wednesday from noon to 6 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.
A face mask and social distancing is required at the services.
