Obituary

Mr. Cyrus William Ferguson Jr. of Nathalie, VA peacefully departed this life on Friday, March 19th at the age of 96.


Mr. Ferguson was born June 16, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Cyrus William Ferguson and Beulah Rice Ferguson. He was married to Joanne W. Ferguson and was United States Army World War II Veteran. Mr. Ferguson retired from the United States Post Office after 23 years of service. He had many hobbies and was involved in the community until his health began to decline. He served on several boards such as Halifax County Community Action, PTO, Halifax County High School Band Booster (president), AARP (president) but his pride and joy was scouting. He began his career with Boy Scouts of America in 1954 as an assistant Scout Master. Throughout his life he remained active in scouting and earned his wood badge, started his own pack in Virginia, worked with special needs children, and gained his Doctorate in Commissioner Science.


Mr. Ferguson leaves to cherish loving memories, his wife: Joanne W. Ferguson; (9) children: Cyrus L. Ferguson of East Orange, NJ, James Ferguson of Conyers, GA, Howard Ferguson of Detroit, Michigan, Dorothea Bell (Robert) of New Rochelle, NY, Carl Ferguson of Ocean Township, NJ, Eric Ferguson of Auburn, GA, Marshall Tucker (Anadee) of Hampton, VA, LaToya Reese (Reginald) of Columbia, SC and Janine Stephens of Halifax, VA; (28) grandchildren; (26) great grandchildren; (2) great great grandchildren; (2) sisters: Helen McKnight of Newark, NJ and Bernice Bamberger of East Orange, NJ; (1) sister-in-law: Betty Manson Miller; (1) brother-in-law: Larry Tucker; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by (1) son: Gregory Ferguson; (1) daughter: Audrey Jackson Ferguson; (5) sisters: Gloria Ferguson, Catherine Brown, Frances Tyndall, Shirley Massey, and Rose Peterkin.


Graveside service for Mr. Cyrus William Ferguson will be held Saturday, March 27that 11:00 a.m. at the Ferguson Family Cemetery in Nathalie, VA with Rev. James Braxton, eulogist.


Public viewing for family and friends will be Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.at Jeffress Funeral Home.
