Ms. Eva Mae Bates of New Jersey and formerly of Halifax County died Monday, January 3rd at the age of 72.

Ms. Bates was born in Halifax Co. on September 10, 1949 to the late Gordon Bates, Sr and Eva C. Bates. She was an educator for the Newark, NJ board of education for 30 years.

Ms. Bates is survived by (1) son: Phillip D. Bates of Virginia Beach, VA; (4) brothers: Earl Bates and Robert Bates (Queen), all of South Boston, VA, James Bates of Danville, VA and Arthur Bates of Albany, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death by (1) brother: Gordon Bates, Jr and (1) sister: Dorothy.

Funeral service for Ms. Eva Mae Bates will be Saturday, January 15th at 2 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home with Rev. Louis Leigh, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Public viewing for family and friends will be one hour prior to service on Saturday.
