Obituary

Mrs. Lula Garthenia Farmer Reed of Richmond, VA and formerly of Halifax County died Sunday, February 28th at the age of 97.


Mrs. Reed was born in Halifax County on June 8, 1923 to the late Hurley Farmer and Estelle Younger Russell Farmer. She was married to the late Johnnie Ralph Reed and was a member of New Zion Baptist Church. After relocating to Richmond, Lula fellowshipped with Triumphant Baptist Church.


Mrs. Reed is survived by (8) children: Elsie Williams (Bernard), Dorothy Hart (Rogers), Thelma Brown, Sallie Kidd, Joseph Reed (Wilma), Pearline Reed, Johnnie Reed (Susie) and Linda Barksdale; (2) foster children; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death (2) daughters: Estelle Reed and Lillie Mae Barksdale; (4) grandchildren: Wayne Reed, Keith Barksdale, Rachelle Barksdale and Edward Frederick Reed; (1) great grandchild: Tariq Dickerson; (6) siblings: Elizabeth Farmer, Pauline Farmer, Willie Lee Farmer, and Benjamin Farmer and (4) sons-in-law: Louis Kidd, James Barksdale, Robert Barksdale and Lorenzo Brown.


Graveside services for Mrs. Lula Garthenia Farmer Reed will be held Sunday, March 7th at 1 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Nathalie, VA with Bishop Joseph Farmer, eulogist. Due to Covid-19, a mask and social distancing in required.


Public viewing for family and friends will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.
