Matthew Ghee

Obituary

In the early morning hours of Saturday, February 20, 2021, God called home another one of His faithful servants, Deacon Matthew Ghee.


Deacon Matthew Ghee was born in Charlotte County on Wednesday, July 27, 1927 to the late Samuel and Odell Mosley Ghee. In his youth, he confessed his belief in Jesus Christ and was baptized at the Salem Baptist Church. He attended the Salem School, which is a historic Rosenwald School, and is located directly across the road from the Salem Baptist Church.


Deacon Ghee served his country in the U. S. Army military in WWII. He was stationed in Japan. After serving is country, he met and married the love of his life, Ernestine L. Mitchell. They married on September 2, 1950. From this union, two children were born, a son, Ernest Lorenzo Ghee (deceased) and a daughter, Anita Joyce Ghee.


Deacon Ghee worked at places such as Morgan Sawmill, the Arlington, VA School System, and finally, Burlington Industries in Halifax, VA, which he retired from on August 10, 1992 after 27 years of employment.


Deacon Ghee leaves to cherish many memories, his wife, Ernestine M. Ghee of the home; one daughter, Anita Ghee Carden (Sterling, Sr.) of Scottsburg, VA; one daughter-in-law, Wellving E. Ghee of Chesapeake, VA; three granddaughters, Rosalyn Anita Ghee and Jennifer Elaine Ghee of Chesapeake, VA; Ashley Hill Tune (Bryant) of Danville, VA, one grandson, Sterling A. Carden, Jr. (Chasity) of South Boston, VA; three great granddaughters, Aja Michelle Hill and Londyn MiKenzie Hill of Danville, VA, and Briyonna Michelle Tune of Lynchburg, VA; one sister-in-law, Gracie M. Majors (Theodore, Sr.) of Halifax, VA; two brothers-in-laws, Elijah Mitchell of Tega Cay, SC and Roy Mitchell of Silver Springs, MD and a host of nieces and nephews, whom he loved so much, along with other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Deacon Ghee was preceded in death by his son, Ernest Lorenzo Ghee and all of his siblings, Samuel, Mary Francis, Lucy Mae and Willie Lee.


Graveside service for Mr. Ghee will be held Thursday, February 25th at 1 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Red Oak, VA. With Rev. Roger Allen eulogist and military rites by United States Army Honor Guard.


Public viewing will be Wednesday, February 24th from noon to 6 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home. Due to COVID-19 guidelines a face mask and social distancing will be required.
