Mr. Richard Nelson “Coot” Powell, Sr. of Scottsburg, VA died Thursday April 15th at the age of 61.

Mr. Powell was born in Halifax County, VA on Sept 21, 1959 to the late  James Harrison Powell, Sr. and Dorothy Wylie Powell. He was a member of St. Matthews Baptist Church, Clover, VA.

Mr. Powell is survived by (2) daughters: TyRhonda Roberts and Jessica Dabbs-Ingram (Ryane), both of Danville, VA; (3) sons: Eric Roberts, Sr. and Richard N. Powell, Jr. (Samandria), both from South Boston, VA and Malik Powell of Durham NC; (11) grandsons: JustUs, JaKory, Eric, Jr., Caleb, Cameron, Malik, Jr., Caine, RaShaun, RaShaud, Ricsuan and Stephen; (5) granddaughters: Ainiya, Amyrah, RaShuana, Tymesha and My’Kerrah; (4) great-grandchildren; (2) sisters: Lola Powell of South Boston, VA and Mary Powell Edmonds (Fred) of Drakes Branch, VA; (3) brothers: Dennis Powell, Bobby Powell and Messiah Powell, all of South Boston, VA; (1) sister-in-law; (1) aunt; a significant other: Ms. Tammy Mitchell; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Powell and brother, James Powell, Jr.

Graveside service for Mr. Richard Nelson “Coot” Powell, Sr. will be held Thursday, April 22nd at 2 p.m. at The Powell Family Cemetery with Rev. Morris Mitchell officiating. Following COVID-19 guidelines, a face mask and social distancing will be required.

Public viewing will be Wednesday, April 21st from 2 to 6 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel.
